Isiolo
General Information
Located in Eastern Kenya along the A2 is Isiolo. This is the main urban gateway to the Samburu-Buffalo Springs-Shaba National Reserves to the north. Isiolo comes across as having a dusty old-town feel, with many of its residents wearing their traditional clothing.
Founded at the end of World War 1 as a resettlement camp for former Somali soldiers, the town still has a strong military presence with three army training and tank units being based here. Isiolo has many different cultures residing here with it being predominantly Muslim, with approximately 15 mosques dotted throughout the town. There is also a large Catholic church.
Isiolo is an important stop for visitors travelling further north, to stock up on necessities.

Samburu-Buffalo Springs-Shaba National Reserves - trio of ecologically unfenced reserves which all together, 440sq km, protects the semiarid savannah on the Ewaso Nyiro river.
Lake Turkano - the largest lake of any kind to be set in a desert.
Visitors to this town will enjoy the busy market, which is a wonderful place to buy homemade bread, metal jewellery etc. The market is also a trading place for cattle and other livestock that form an integral part of the north's limited economy.
