Maralal
General Information
Maralal is situated in the Eastern region of Kenya and is a lively town with modern facilities. There is still a strong traditional feel, with spiritual significance of the Samburu culture. This is also a town like Isiolo which is a good stop-over for stocking up on necessities before venturing further north.
Maralal stands at an altitude of approximately 1 965m on the northern edge of the Laikipia Plateau. The town is not a big tourist attraction, but does have one notable building in the form of the Jomo Kenyatta House. Kenyatta, who was Kenya's first president, was apprehended here by the colonial authorities in 1961.

Activities in Maralal
Maralal is not a high tourist destination, however, the exciting and entertaining International Camel Derby is held here every August. It has become a popular event with both tourists and locals. Held over a weekend and consisting of short amateur races and longer more serious races, where camels and riders are assisted by handlers, race for the finishing lines.
The town lies near the unfenced Marala Wildlife Sanctuary, where Zebra, Eland, baboon, Impala and other wild animals can be spotted at the waterhole.
