Meru
General Information
Meru is the largest town in the Central region of Kenya and is situated along the northeast foot of Mount Kenya. It receives a higher rainfall than the towns on the western slopes of the mountain.
The countryside is closely cultivated with fruit, timber, coffee and tea productions. It is also an important area in Kenya for growing Khat, a leafy stimulant known locally as miraa.
Meru town is the base for visits to Meru's National Park, and is named after the local Meru people.

Activities in Meru
There are plenty of things to do and see in and around Meru. The local market has a wonderful selection of fresh produce, along with arts and crafts.
In the town centre there is the Meru National Museum, occupying the towns oldest building since 1976. The museum has three galleries, of which the most interesting is an outdoor display of medicinal shrubs and herbs traditionally used by Meru healers.
