Eldoret
General Information
One of the popular tourist destinations and fastest growing town in Kenya, is Eldoret. This beautiful town is situated in Western Kenya and straddles the Kenya-Uganda Highway. Eldoret is named after the Maasai word 'eldore' which means stony river, referring to the river bed of the Sosiani River.
Eldoret is now a busy service centre for goods trucks heading to Kampala and further. There are factories and plants scattered through town for light industries such as textiles, tanning, woollen mills and mushroom cultivation. The town is the collection and distribution point for the majority of the fresh produce grown in Western Kenya, as well as the export of ornamental flowers and exotic vegetables via the Eldoret Airport.
Two well-known structures in Eldoret is the Moi University and its training hospital, filling the town with young people.
