Kilifi
General Information
Kilifi is located on the Coast of Kenya. The town lies on the Kilifi Creek, which is one of the safest natural harbours on the East African coast. Kilifi is known for its ruins and tombs. The Mnarani ruins situated on a cliff above the south bank are protected as Mnarani National Monument. Dating back to 13th to 16th Centuries when it was the most important settlement on the creek, it can be seen after climbing the 104 steep steps to the top. There is a Sultan's tomb as well as two well-preserved mosques on view. The ruins include one of the deepest wells found along the Southern Coast. Another impressive feature of Mnarani is an 800 year old Baobab tree believed to be the largest in Kenya.
The town is not a major tourist centre, however visitors seek the quiet and calm of the area. There is a semi-submerged ferry that was the only access from Mombasa before the Kilifi bridge opened in 1991.
