Kongowea Junction
General Information
Situated on the mainland off Mombasa Island, on the Coast of Kenya, is Kongowea Junction. Formerly known as Freretown, after Sir Bartle Frere, who negotiated the abolition of the slave trade with the Sultan of Zanzibar in the 1870’s.
In the 1870's and 1880's Freretown became a settlement of freed slaves who formed a thriving Christian community under the guidance of William Salter Peel, the first Anglican Bishop of East Africa.
The 400m long Nyali Bridge, built in the early 1980's, spans the west end of the old harbour and is the only road connection between Mombasa Island and the north coast. The remains of the previous pontoon bridge are still visible from the island and mainland.
