Makindu
General Information
This small town of Makindu is located on the Nairobi-Mombasa highway in the Eastern region of Kenya. On a bright clear day the views of Mount Kilimanjaro across to the Tanzanian border are spectacular.
Makindu is the first town along the highway which features the distinctive baobab trees which can be seen from the road. Although a small town the most admired Sikh temple is situated here in which it is surrounded by a peaceful garden filled with flowers. The main temple building dates back to 1926, but the original tin-roofed structure built in 1902 remains alongside it.
Many followers of Guru Nanak Dev, the founder of Sikhism use Makindu as a pilgrimage site, although visitors of all religious affiliations are welcomed. A 24-hour facility offers accommodation and food to travellers for a donation.
